Vegetable Farmers of Central Tunisia

Supporting farmers in addressing climate and economic challenges

Technical Partner:

ANNUAL BUDGET :

70,000 €

Context

In the governorates of Monastir and Kairouan, vegetable farming is an important activity for farms. Although production systems differ between the two areas, farmers face growing constraints: uncertain availability of irrigation water, salinization, declining soil fertility, limited crop rotations, and worsening plant health problems. Climate change is intensifying these difficulties through more frequent droughts, higher temperatures, and increasingly irregular rainfall.

These challenges are compounded by economic difficulties, including rising input prices, uncertainty over market outlets, and fragile profitability. Farmers also have limited access to local advisory and support services to help them adapt their practices, control costs, and respond more effectively to these new challenges.

Since 2025, Fert and its partner Solidarité Civique Tunisie have been supporting vegetable farmers in central Tunisia in partnership with various local farmer groups linked to water GDAs and SMSAs.

“After measuring the flow rate of my drip irrigation system, I was able to adapt my practices and reduce water use from 3 litres to 1 litre per tomato plant per week. Before that, what was I doing? I was watering my tomatoes for more than 4 hours, when I could have stopped after just 1 hour and 30 minutes!”
